Summer Safety Tips for Kids!

Summer Safety Tips for Kids: Small Habits That Make Big Adventures Safer

Summer is here, and that means more sunshine, more outdoor play, more family outings, and more opportunities for children to explore the world around them. Whether your child is riding a scooter, climbing at the playground, heading out on a road trip, or helping care for the family pet, summer is the perfect time to build healthy habits that keep everyone safe, strong, and smiling.

This month, our Fitness Stars are learning about summer safety, including car seat safety, bike and scooter safety, and animal safety during hot weather. We’re also encouraging our Stars to practice an “I think I can!” attitude, reminding them that trying hard, even when something feels difficult, helps them grow in confidence.

1. Buckle Up for Every Ride.

Summer schedules can be busy. A quick trip to camp, the grocery store, swim lessons, or a family gathering may feel routine, but every ride matters.

Children should always be secured in a car seat or booster seat that is appropriate for their age, size, and stage. Before heading out, take a moment to check that straps are snug, the harness is positioned correctly, and the seat is properly installed.

On hot days, car safety also means heat safety. Cars can warm up quickly, so children should never be left unattended in a vehicle. Families can also use sunshades, bring water, and plan ahead to help keep the car cooler during summer outings.

At Stretch-n-Grow, we love simple routines children can learn and repeat. Try saying, “Buckle up before we go!” each time you get in the car. Repetition helps children understand that safety is part of every adventure.

2. Ride Smart on Bikes and Scooters

Bike rides and scooter time are wonderful ways for children to build balance, coordination, confidence, and independence. They are also great opportunities to practice responsibility.

Before children ride, make sure they are wearing the right safety gear, including a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads. Helmets should fit securely and sit properly on the head. Children should ride in safe, designated areas away from traffic and should always be supervised.

You can also invite your child to help with a quick “safety check” before riding. Are the tires ready? Do the brakes work? Is the scooter or bike in good shape? These little checks teach children that being active and being safe go hand in hand.

And of course, remind your Star to stay alert. Looking out for cars, other riders, pets, and people helps children develop awareness while they move.

3. Keep Pets Safe in the Heat

Summer safety is not just for people. Pets and outdoor animals also need extra care when temperatures rise!

Children can help make sure pets have fresh water, shade, and a cool place to rest. This is a great way to teach kindness, responsibility, and empathy. It is also important to remind children that animals should never be left in parked cars during warm weather.

When children interact with pets, especially unfamiliar animals, adults should supervise closely. Encourage gentle hands, calm voices, and respectful space. These small lessons help children learn how to care for animals while keeping themselves and their furry friends safe.

4. Build an “I Can!” Attitude This Summer

Safety rules are important, but so is mindset. This month’s Star Focus is all about having an “I can!” attitude, especially when something feels challenging.

Learning to buckle a helmet, follow riding rules, try a new movement skill, or remember how to care for a pet may take practice. That is okay! Children grow when they are encouraged to try, try again, and believe in themselves.

Families can support this at home with phrases like:

“You are learning.” “Let’s try it together.” “You can do hard things.” “I love how you kept trying.”

These simple words help children connect effort with success. Confidence grows one small moment at a time.

5. Make Movement Part of Summer Safety

This month, Fitness Stars are also practicing movement skills like throwing, striking, climbing, and crawling, along with fun yoga poses such as boat, whale, dolphin, and crocodile. These activities help children strengthen their bodies, improve coordination, and build body awareness.

When children move often, they learn how their bodies work. When they practice safety while moving, they learn how to enjoy active play with confidence.

That is the Stretch-n-Grow way: healthy bodies, happy hearts, and children who believe, “I think I can!”

Final Thought for Families

Summer fun does not have to be complicated. A snug car seat, a well-fitted helmet, a shaded water bowl for pets, and a positive attitude can make a big difference.

This month, let’s help children stay safe, stay active, and keep growing into confident, caring, capable Stars! We’d love to hear how your family stays safe in the summer, so feel free to leave us a comment!
